Custom Napkins for Food Trucks: Branding That Leaves With Every Order

September 18, 2026 · Napki Admin

A food truck has no dining room, no menu on the wall inside and no table where your name sits in front of the customer. The order is handed through a hatch, and thirty seconds later the customer walks off. What travels with them is the food, the box and the napkin.

That makes custom napkins for food trucks one of the few branding tools that follows your customer down the street, into the park and onto the festival lawn. This guide covers which size handles street food, which paper holds up to sauces, how to design for a napkin that gets crumpled, and how to reorder without breaking your season. It also answers the questions truck owners ask before committing to a first run.

Why a branded napkin works harder for a food truck

A restaurant has walls to carry its brand. A truck has a wrap, a menu board and not much else. Once the customer turns away from the hatch, the wrap is behind them.

  • The napkin goes where the truck cannot. Customers eat standing, walking or sitting on a curb somewhere nearby.
  • It is seen by the next customer in line. People at a market look at what others are eating, and who made it.
  • It supports repeat business. A handle or a QR code on the napkin tells people where to find you next week.
  • It looks organized. A printed napkin signals that the operation is planned, which helps when you pitch for event bookings.

For trucks that also do private events, weddings and corporate catering, the same napkin travels into a very different room.

Choosing the right size for street food

Street food is eaten with hands, often while standing. That rules out the tiny cocktail napkin for most menus, and it rarely needs a full dinner size either.

Menu typeRecommended size (open)Folded sizeWhy
Churros, doughnuts, small bites20×20 cm10×10 cmEnough for a quick wipe; fits a small cone or tray
Coffee, crêpes, snacks24×24 cm12×12 cmGood balance for light, dry food
Burgers, tacos, wraps30×30 cm15×15 cmWraps around the food or handles sauce
Loaded fries, BBQ, ribs33×33 cm16.5×16.5 cmCovers a full hand with messy food
Private events, seated service40×40 cm20×20 cmProper dinner napkin for catered jobs

Two checks save a wasted order. First, sizes are always quoted open. Second, a “20×20” label can mean either a 20×20 cm cocktail napkin or a 40×40 cm dinner napkin folded to 20×20 cm. Our napkin sizes guide shows the difference in real proportions.

Many trucks settle on one size for the hatch and a larger one for event bookings. You can order both with the same design.

Paper quality: what survives a sauce

Absorbency matters more at a food truck than in most restaurants. Customers use one napkin, not three, so it has to cope.

  1. 2-ply. The everyday standard. It suits light, dry food and high volume.
  2. 3-ply. Noticeably thicker and more absorbent. A sensible step up for burgers and anything with sauce.
  3. Double Point. Two-ply paper with an embossed border that locks the layers together, so they do not separate in use.
  4. Airlaid. Feels almost like fabric. Usually too much for the hatch, but a strong choice when your truck caters a wedding or a gala.

The paper qualities page compares all four. If you hesitate between two, feel them side by side before you order.

Test the paper with your own food first. Request the free sample pack: 5 printed napkins in 3 finishes and a size guide. The pack is free; you only pay the shipping, billed as one small FedEx box ($149.57 Economy or $196.90 Priority).

Designing a napkin that still works when crumpled

A food truck napkin is grabbed, folded, wiped and scrunched. Design for that life, not for a flat mock-up on a screen.

  • Keep the logo bold and simple. Fine lines disappear once the paper creases.
  • Repeat the logo or place it where the folded napkin shows it. A napkin folded in four shows roughly a quarter of its surface.
  • Add one route back to you. Your social handle or a QR code to your weekly locations. Not both, and not a phone number in small type.
  • Match the wrap. Use the same colors as the truck so the napkin and the vehicle read as one brand.
  • Leave out prices and menus. They change; your napkin stock should not have to.

A worked example: a taco truck with a teal and orange wrap. The owner picks a 30×30 cm 3-ply napkin, prints the logo in teal plus the Instagram handle in orange, and uses the same design for the hatch and for private events. Two spot colors on white make Deluxe 2-inks the natural fit.

Print options and minimum orders

Your artwork decides the printing technique. The technique decides the minimum order and any setup fee.

  • Full Color (digital CMYK). For photos, gradients and multi-color illustrations. White napkins only, no plate fee, from 20 units. Useful for a first test run before a season.
  • Deluxe 1-ink. One spot color, printed with a metal plate on white or colored napkins. From 100 units. One-off plate fee of $49.09.
  • Deluxe 2-inks. Two spot colors on the same napkin. From 100 units. One-off plate fee of $98.18.

For a truck that reorders through the season, Deluxe has a clear advantage. The plate is paid once and reused at no extra cost on every reorder of the same design. The Deluxe range lists every size and paper it is available on.

If your wrap uses a colored background and you want a matching colored napkin, Deluxe is the only option. Full Color needs a white napkin.

Reordering without running out mid-season

Running out of branded napkins on a busy festival weekend means handing out plain ones, or none at all. Plan reorders around the production slots.

Production takes 7 business days from proof approval. Shipping adds 1–2 business days (Priority) or about 6 (Economy), plus 1–3 days for US customs clearance. If you can wait longer, you pay less: 30 business days saves 5%, 50 days saves 10% and 60 days saves 15%.

A simple routine for trucks:

  1. Before the season: approve your main run about 16 weeks ahead, put it on a 60-business-day slot and claim the 15% discount.
  2. Count as you go: note how many boxes a typical market day uses.
  3. Set a reorder point: when stock covers roughly four weeks of trading, reorder. Delivery takes about 10–12 business days from approval with Priority shipping, or 14–16 with Economy.
  4. Before big events: add a separate order for the festival or wedding, booked early.

Shipping is charged per FedEx box to the 48 contiguous states: a small box holds up to 500 napkins ($149.57 Economy, $196.90 Priority) and a large one up to 2,000 ($172.79 Economy, $239.12 Priority). Combining sizes in one order keeps costs down. Napki charges no sales tax, because the order is exported from Spain. Import duties, the Merchandise Processing Fee and any state or local taxes are paid by the buyer on arrival (DAP).

Custom napkins for food trucks at festivals and private events

Many trucks earn a large share of their year at festivals, markets and private bookings. Each setting asks something slightly different of the napkin.

  • Festivals and markets: volume and absorbency come first. A 30×30 cm 3-ply napkin with a bold one-color logo is hard to beat.
  • Weddings and private parties: the host sees your napkin on every table. A larger size or Airlaid paper lifts the presentation.
  • Corporate catering: some clients ask for their own logo next to yours. Two spot colors on white fit Deluxe 2-inks.

Keep one core design for the hatch and adapt only the size or paper for bookings. Your custom napkins for food trucks then stay recognizable wherever the truck parks.
