Napkin Paper Weight and Ply Guide: 2-Ply, 3-Ply, Double Point and Airlaid

August 28, 2026 · Napki Admin

Two napkins can be identical in size, identical in print, and feel like they came from different businesses. The difference is the paper. Ply count, embossing and fibre structure decide whether a guest registers your napkin as an afterthought or as part of the experience — and they move the unit price more than almost any other choice you make.

This napkin paper weight and ply guide covers the four qualities that matter in hospitality and events: 2-ply, 3-ply, Double Point and Airlaid. What each one is, how it behaves in the hand, where it belongs, and how to avoid the classic mistake of paying for a quality your venue does not need.

What “ply” actually means

Ply is the number of tissue layers bonded together to make the napkin. A 2-ply napkin is two layers, a 3-ply is three. More layers means more thickness, more absorbency and more perceived quality — and a higher unit cost.

Ply is not the whole story, though, and treating it as a single quality ladder is where people go wrong. Two other factors change the result completely:

  • Embossing presses a pattern into the paper. It adds visual texture and, more usefully, mechanically locks the layers together so they do not separate while the napkin is in use.
  • Fibre structure is a different question altogether. Airlaid is not tissue at all — it is a non-woven material with a fabric-like drape, which is why it sits outside the ply ladder entirely.

So the real choice is not “how many layers do I want” but “which of four distinct materials fits my service”.

The four qualities, side by side

3-plyThree tissue layersNoticeably thicker, more absorbentMid-range restaurants, corporate events
Double Point2-ply with embossed border on two opposite edgesTextured edge, layers stay bondedSit-down restaurants — the southern European standard
AirlaidNon-woven specialty paperCloth-like, drapes, soft on skinWeddings, fine dining, hotel receptions

2-ply — the everyday standard

Two layers of soft tissue, standard absorbency, the most affordable tier. This is the correct choice for casual bars, takeaway counters and any event where napkin consumption is measured in tens of thousands. It is available in every size, from 20 units on Full Colour printing and from 100 units on Deluxe.

The mistake to avoid is pairing 2-ply with a large format. A 40×40 napkin in basic 2-ply feels flimsy precisely because there is more surface to register the thinness. At 20×20 or 24×24, nobody notices — and that is exactly why 2-ply is the right call for cocktail service.

3-ply — a perceptible step up

Three layers, noticeably thicker and more absorbent than the standard. It is the choice for mid-range restaurants and corporate events that want the quality bump to be felt rather than argued for. A guest will not count the layers, but they will notice that the napkin holds up.

Double Point — the restaurant favourite

Double Point is 2-ply paper with an embossed border running along two opposite edges. Two things happen. The embossed pattern adds visual texture, so the napkin reads as considered rather than generic. And the embossing locks the two layers together, which stops the classic annoyance of the plies peeling apart mid-meal.

It is the standard for sit-down restaurants across southern Europe, and it is the single most common configuration we produce for hospitality: 33×33 Double Point with a one-ink logo. It gives a professional finish at a price that works for a venue reordering every quarter.

Airlaid — the cloth-like upgrade

Airlaid is a specialty non-woven paper that feels and drapes almost like fabric. It has excellent absorbency, it is soft on the skin, and the visual upgrade is immediate — guests routinely assume it is cloth until they handle it.

It is also the most expensive of the four, typically €0.40–1.50 per unit depending on size and quantity. That premium is easy to justify for a wedding, a fine dining room or a hotel reception, and hard to justify for a busy lunch service. Our paper qualities page sets out the same comparison with the use case for each.

A four-line decision guide

If you want the short version, this is it:

  1. Tight budget, high volume → 2-ply.
  2. Café or mid-range restaurant → Double Point.
  3. Upscale restaurant or corporate event → 3-ply.
  4. Wedding, fine dining, hotel reception → Airlaid.
  5. Genuinely unsure → order the free sample and decide with the paper in your hand.

A worked example. A 40-cover bistro running lunch and dinner uses around 3,000 napkins a month. At 33×33 they compare Double Point against Airlaid. Double Point gives them the embossed edge and a sharp single-ink logo at a unit price that keeps a quarterly reorder painless. Airlaid would roughly double the paper cost for a room where napkins are used quickly and replaced often — so they take Double Point for the dining room and order a small Airlaid run for their private events space, where the napkin sits on the table longer and gets looked at.

Cannot decide from a screen? No one can — paper is a tactile product. We send a free pack of five napkins covering three different finishes, with real printed examples and a size guide, in 48–72 hours. The sample costs nothing; you only pay the shipping.

How quality interacts with printing

Your paper choice narrows or widens your printing options, so it is worth deciding both together.

  • Full Colour (digital CMYK) handles photos, gradients and complex multi-colour logos from 20 units, with no plate fee — but it prints on white napkins only, because the CMYK process needs a white substrate.
  • Deluxe 1-ink prints one saturated spot colour with a metal cliché, on white or coloured napkins, from 100 units. The plate costs €42.69 once, then it is reused free on every reorder of the same design.
  • Deluxe 2-inks adds a second spot colour on the same napkin, from 100 units, with a one-off plate fee of €85.38. This is the option for a logo and a tagline in different colours.

The practical consequence: if your brand depends on a coloured napkin — a deep navy, a warm cream — you are in Deluxe territory and your minimum is 100 units, not 20. If your design is a photograph or a gradient, you are in Full Colour on white, whichever quality of paper you choose underneath.

What each quality costs

Unit prices across the full catalogue run from about €0.16 to €1.50, and quality is one of the two big levers alongside quantity. As a reference point, 500 units of 33×33 Full Colour on 2-ply comes to roughly €0.36 per unit — about €180 before VAT and shipping. Airlaid sits at the top of the range, €0.40–1.50 per unit depending on size and volume. Large tiers from 10,000 units bring unit costs below €0.16.

Two costs live outside the unit price. Shipping is a flat €40 plus VAT per parcel anywhere in the EU, quoted case by case outside it. And the Deluxe printing plate is a one-off: €42.69 for a single ink, €85.38 for two, reused free of charge on every subsequent run of the same design. That is why a venue reordering the same napkin four times a year should look hard at Deluxe even if the first order looks more expensive on paper.

The calculator on our custom napkins page returns an indicative price for your exact combination of size, quality, printing and quantity in about 30 seconds.

Getting the order right

Once you have picked a quality, four more details finish the specification:

  1. Size, stated open in centimetres — and the fold if you know it. See our napkin sizes guide if “20×20” means two things to you.
  2. Printing type and, if the napkin is not white, the napkin colour.
  3. Quantity, respecting the minimums: 20 units on Full Colour, 100 on Deluxe.
  4. Deadline. Standard production and delivery is 7 working days from mock-up approval. Longer lead times earn automatic discounts: 5% at 15 working days, 10% at 20, and 15% at 30.

Design comes with the order at no extra cost. The first digital mock-up arrives within 24 hours and you get up to two rounds of revisions. Production runs at our own facilities in Mislata, Valencia, where we have manufactured since 1986, and if the finished napkin does not match the mock-up you approved, we reprint it free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 2-ply and 3-ply napkins? The number of tissue layers. 3-ply is noticeably thicker and more absorbent than 2-ply, and reads as more premium in the hand. 2-ply is the everyday standard and the more affordable tier.

What are Double Point napkins? 2-ply paper with an embossed border on two opposite edges. The embossing adds visual texture and locks the layers together so they do not separate in use. It is the standard for sit-down restaurants in southern Europe.

What is an Airlaid napkin? A specialty non-woven paper that feels and drapes almost like fabric. It has excellent absorbency and a clear visual upgrade over tissue, and it is the usual choice for weddings, fine dining and hotel receptions.

Which napkin quality is best for a restaurant? Double Point at 33×33 is the most common hospitality configuration. It gives an embossed edge and a sharp printed logo at a price that survives quarterly reordering.

Is Airlaid worth the extra cost? For weddings, fine dining and receptions, usually yes — guests often assume it is cloth. For high-turnover lunch service, the premium is harder to justify, since napkins are used and replaced quickly.

Can I print full colour on any paper quality? Full Colour digital printing works on white napkins in any of the four qualities. If you want a coloured napkin, you need Deluxe printing with one or two inks, which starts at 100 units.

What is the cheapest napkin quality? 2-ply. It is the standard tissue option and the most affordable tier, available in every size from 20 units on Full Colour printing.

Can I compare the qualities before ordering? Yes. The free sample pack contains five napkins across three different finishes with real prints and a size guide, delivered in 48–72 hours. You only pay the shipping.

Decide with the paper in your hand

Paper quality is the one decision you should not make from a product photo. Thickness, embossing and drape are tactile, and the gap between 2-ply and Airlaid is obvious the moment you hold both. We send a free pack of five napkins covering three finishes, with real printed examples and a size guide, anywhere in the EU in 48–72 hours — the sample is free and you only cover the shipping. If you already know what you want, the calculator gives you an indicative price by size, quality and quantity in about 30 seconds, with no form to fill in. Design is included, and delivery takes 7 working days.
