Personalised Christening Napkins: Sizes, Designs and Quantities

August 14, 2026 · Napki Admin

A christening is a smaller, quieter celebration than a wedding, and the details work differently because of it. There is no dance floor and no seating plan drama — usually just a church, a family lunch, and forty to eighty people who mostly already know each other.

That scale changes what a personalised napkin needs to do. It is not a branding exercise. It is a small, tangible keepsake that sits on the table with the child’s name on it, and that guests genuinely take home. This guide covers what to put on it, how many to order, which size suits a family lunch, and what the production process actually involves.

What goes on a christening napkin

The content is more settled than you might expect. Across the christening and naming-ceremony designs we print, almost all of them combine two or three of these elements:

  1. The child’s name — always the anchor, usually the largest element.
  2. The date of the ceremony — often set below the name in a smaller size.
  3. A short phrase — a line of welcome, a blessing, or a simple “thank you for sharing this day”.
  4. A small motif — a cross, a dove, a star, a simple line illustration, a tiny wreath.
  5. The family surname — occasionally, when several branches of a family are travelling in.

The most common single layout is the simplest: the name centred, the date beneath it, and one small motif above. It reads instantly on a folded napkin, which is how guests will actually see it.

A useful constraint: pick one decorative element, not three. A cross *and* a wreath *and* a script flourish crowd each other at napkin scale. Whichever motif carries the most meaning for you is the one to keep.

Colour palettes that photograph well

Christening tables tend toward soft palettes, and the classic combinations still hold up:

PaletteNapkinInkNotes
Traditional softWhitePale blue or soft pinkThe safest and most requested
Understated modernWhiteGrey or sage greenPhotographs beautifully, reads as contemporary
Warm neutralKraft or creamBrown or whiteWorks well for garden and outdoor lunches
FormalWhiteNavy or deep goldSuits a church lunch in a restaurant
Full colourWhitePhoto or watercolour illustrationThe only route for gradients or a photograph

That last row matters technically. Full Colour digital printing (CMYK) is only possible on white napkins. If you want a watercolour motif, a photograph of the child, or any design with gradients, the napkin has to be white. On coloured napkins we print with Deluxe 1 or 2 inks instead, which means flat, solid colours — which suits most christening designs perfectly well.

You can browse real printed work on the gallery to see how these palettes look on paper rather than on screen.

How many christening napkins to order

The arithmetic is not complicated, but people consistently under-order. Napkins get used more than once per guest, and the leftovers are not waste — they are the keepsakes people take home.

A reliable working figure is two to three napkins per guest for a christening lunch. Break it down by moment:

  1. Welcome drinks / aperitif — roughly 1.5 per guest. This is the highest-consumption moment, because napkins are picked up and set down constantly.
  2. Seated meal — 1 per guest, sometimes 1.5 if there is a course eaten by hand.
  3. Cake and coffee — 1 per guest.
  4. Keepsakes — allow around 10% extra for guests who pocket one, and for photographs.
  5. Safety margin — add 10% on top of the total.

For a 60-guest christening that comes to roughly 150-180 napkins. Rounding up to 200 is the sensible move, because the marginal cost per unit falls as the quantity rises, and running out mid-lunch is the one outcome nobody wants.

If you are ordering a single size for the whole day, size for the seated meal — a larger napkin covers a cocktail moment fine, while the reverse does not hold.

Which size for a christening lunch

Paper napkin sizes are always quoted as open dimensions in centimetres, and most napkins are folded in four, so the folded size on the table is a quarter of the stated figure. The size guide covers this properly. For a christening, three sizes cover almost every case:

  • 24×24 cm (folded 12×12) — the aperitif and canapé size. Comfortable for a name plus a date.
  • 33×33 cm (folded 16.5×16.5) — the standard dinner napkin, and the default for a seated family lunch.
  • 40×40 cm (folded 20×20) — the large dinner napkin, for a more formal restaurant setting. Room for a fuller layout.

Be careful with the label “20×20”. It refers either to the small cocktail napkin (20×20 open, 10×10 folded) or to the large dinner napkin (40×40 open, 20×20 folded) — a four-fold difference in surface area, and the single most common source of mis-orders in this industry. We confirm which one you mean every time.

There is also the Kangaroo fold, a pocket that holds the cutlery. It is a premium touch typically based on 33×33 or 40×40 paper, and it works nicely for a christening in a restaurant because the printed face of the pocket sits face-up on every place setting.

Paper quality for a family lunch

Four options, and the choice is mostly about the setting:

  • 2-ply — two layers of soft tissue, the standard everyday quality and the most affordable tier. Right for a high-volume aperitif.
  • 3-ply — thicker and more absorbent, a perceptible step up in feel.
  • Double Point — 2-ply with an embossed border on two opposite edges. The embossing adds texture and stops the layers separating. This is the restaurant standard in southern Europe, and a strong middle choice.
  • Airlaid — a non-woven paper that feels and drapes almost like fabric. Excellent absorbency and the clear visual upgrade. It costs more, typically €0.40–1.50 per unit depending on size and quantity.

For a christening in a restaurant, Double Point at 33×33 is the most balanced choice most families land on. For a formal lunch where the napkin is part of a set table, Airlaid earns its extra cost. The paper qualities page sets out the differences in full.

Minimums, printing and what it costs

The minimum order depends entirely on the printing method:

  • Full Colour (digital CMYK) — from 20 units, on white napkins only. This is the route for photographs, watercolours and gradients.
  • Deluxe 1 ink — from 100 units, on white or coloured napkins, with a one-off printing plate fee of €42.69 on a first order.
  • Deluxe 2 inks — from 100 units, with a plate fee of €85.38.

A 20-unit minimum is unusually low for printed napkins, and it exists precisely for celebrations at this scale. A small christening with 30 guests does not need to order a thousand napkins to get a personalised design.

Indicative unit prices run from €0.16 to €1.50 depending on size, quality, printing type and quantity. As a concrete reference point, 500 units of 33×33 in Full Colour on 2-ply works out at roughly €0.36 per unit — around €180 before VAT and shipping.

On top of the unit price: shipping is a flat €40 + VAT per parcel across the entire EU, and VAT is 21% (reverse charge for EU businesses with a valid VAT number). The calculator on the custom napkins page returns an indicative figure in about thirty seconds, with no form to fill in.

Timing: when to order

Production and delivery take 7 working days from mock-up approval, anywhere in the EU. The design conversation happens before that clock starts: you send your idea, the first digital mock-up comes back within 24 hours, and up to two rounds of revisions are included at no cost.

In practice, allowing three weeks between your first message and the ceremony is comfortable. Two weeks is achievable. One week is tight but not impossible if the design is settled quickly.

There is also a financial reason to book early. Longer production windows carry discounts: 15 working days (-5%), 20 working days (-10%), 30 working days (-15%). A christening date is usually known months ahead, which makes the 30-day window the obvious choice — and the cheapest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for personalised christening napkins?

From 20 units with Full Colour digital printing on white napkins. If you want a coloured napkin, that requires Deluxe 1 or 2-ink printing, with a minimum of 100 units.

Can we print a photograph of the baby on the napkin?

Yes, with Full Colour digital printing, which handles photographs and gradients. It prints on white napkins only. Send us the highest-resolution file you have and we will tell you honestly how it will reproduce before anything goes to press.

How many napkins should we order for 50 guests?

Between 125 and 150 as a working figure — around two to three per guest, covering the aperitif, the meal, coffee, and the ones guests take home. Rounding up to 150 costs relatively little more per unit and removes the risk of running short.

Do we need to provide a finished design?

No. Design is included at no additional cost. Describe what you want, or send a reference image, and our team produces the first mock-up within 24 hours, with up to two rounds of revisions. You only pay if the final result works for you.

Can we see and feel the napkins before ordering?

Yes. We send a free sample pack of five printed napkins in three different finishes, plus a printed size guide, within 48-72 hours. The sample costs nothing; the recipient pays the shipping. There is no purchase obligation.

Which size works best for a christening lunch?

33×33 cm for a standard seated lunch, 40×40 cm for a more formal restaurant setting, and 24×24 cm if you want a separate smaller napkin for the aperitif. Many families order two sizes with the same artwork.

How far in advance should we order?

Allow around three weeks to be comfortable. Production is 7 working days from mock-up approval, and the design stage takes a few days on top. Ordering earlier also unlocks discounts of 5% to 15% on longer production windows.

What if the printed napkins do not match what we approved?

We reprint them free of charge. It is a standing guarantee — no questions, no small print.

Let’s design it together

Send us the child’s name, the date and whatever style you have in mind — a photo of a table you liked is enough to start. Our design team will have a digital mock-up back to you within 24 hours, free and with no obligation, and we will post you a physical sample so you can feel the paper before deciding anything.
