The printing rule that decides your order
Two printing families exist, and for birthdays the choice is usually easy.
Full Colour is digital CMYK printing. It handles photographs, gradients, and designs with three or more colours. It has no plate fee and starts from 20 units — which makes it the natural choice for private parties. The one constraint: Full Colour prints on white napkins only, because the CMYK process needs a white base. It is available on 2-ply, 3-ply, Double Point and Airlaid. Deluxe prints spot colours using a metal cliché. Deluxe 1-ink gives a single saturated colour with very crisp edges on white or coloured napkins, from 100 units, with a one-off plate fee of €42.69. Deluxe 2-inks prints two colours from 100 units, with a plate fee of €85.38.
In practice: a photo cake-topper napkin is Full Colour on white. A gold monogram on a navy napkin for a formal fiftieth is Deluxe. If your party theme requires a coloured napkin, plan for at least 100 units and the one-off plate fee.

Choosing the size
Napkin sizes are always given as open dimensions in centimetres. What guests see on the table is the folded size, normally a quarter of the open sheet, because most napkins are folded in cross.
- 20×20 open → 10×10 folded — the small cocktail napkin. Drinks, canapés, cake slices.
- 24×24 open → 12×12 folded — medium cocktail. Standing parties with finger food.
- 30×30 open → 15×15 folded — small dinner. Buffet plates and children’s meals.
- 33×33 open → 16.5×16.5 folded — the standard dinner napkin.
- 40×40 open → 20×20 folded — large dinner, for a formal seated celebration.
For a typical birthday, 20×20 or 24×24 covers drinks and cake, and 30×30 or 33×33 covers a seated meal. Many hosts order both, using the small ones for the cake moment where photos happen.
Be careful with the label “20×20”. It describes two different products: the small cocktail napkin (20×20 open) and the large dinner napkin (40×40 open, folded to 20×20). Which paper for a party
Four qualities are available, and the right one depends on how formal the celebration is.
- 2-ply — two soft tissue layers, standard absorbency, the most affordable tier. Right for children’s parties and high-volume gatherings.
- 3-ply — three layers, thicker and more absorbent. A noticeable quality step for milestone birthdays.
- Double Point — 2-ply with an embossed border on two opposite edges. The embossing adds texture and stops the layers separating.
- Airlaid — a non-woven specialty paper that feels and drapes almost like fabric. Used for weddings and fine dining, and the choice for a formal anniversary dinner. It costs more than the other three.
A practical split: 2-ply for a children’s party, where volume matters and napkins get destroyed; 3-ply or Double Point for an adult celebration; Airlaid when the birthday is a seated dinner in a restaurant. The paper qualities guide compares all four in detail.

How many napkins does a birthday party need
Guests take more than one. Plan on it.
- Count confirmed guests, not invitations sent.
- Allow 2 napkins per guest for a standard party with drinks and cake.
- Allow 3 per guest if there is a full meal or the guests are children.
- Add 15% margin for spills, refills and napkins taken as keepsakes.
- Round up to the next price tier, because unit costs fall as quantity rises.
Worked example. A 40th birthday with 50 guests, drinks plus a buffet and cake: 50 × 3 = 150 napkins, plus 15% margin = about 175. Round to 200 units of 24×24 in Full Colour on 3-ply. If half the guests are children, add another 10%.
For very small gatherings the 20-unit minimum on Full Colour means you can print a dozen napkins for a family lunch without waste. For larger celebrations, indicative unit prices run from €0.16 to €1.50 depending on size, quality, printing type and quantity — 500 units of 33×33 Full Colour on 2-ply comes to roughly €0.36 per unit.
Costs to plan for beyond the napkins
Three items sit outside the unit price:
- Shipping — flat €40 + VAT per parcel across the entire EU. Outside the EU, on quote.
- Printing plate — only for Deluxe: €42.69 for 1 ink or €85.38 for 2 inks, charged once. Full Colour has no plate fee.
- VAT — 21% applies, with reverse charge for EU B2B customers holding a valid VAT number.
Design is not on that list, and neither are mock-up revisions. Both are included.
The timeline from idea to party
Production and delivery take 7 working days from mock-up approval, anywhere in the EU. Longer lead times cost less: 15 working days at -5%, 20 at -10% and 30 at -15%.

A comfortable plan for a party six weeks away: request the sample immediately, approve artwork within the first week, and order on the 20 or 30-working-day tier for the discount. For a party in two weeks, order on the standard 7-day lead time and approve the mock-up the same day it arrives.
